NATIONAL CHARACTER EDUCATION

Abstract

This research examines the importance of character education in Indonesia, particularly in the context of the RPJP 2005-2025 national development goal of realizing a noble society. The research highlights the challenges posed by rapid technological advancement and the influx of foreign cultures to traditional values and ethics. Using a literature study and descriptive analysis, this research investigates the theoretical underpinnings of character education, drawing on the works of Lickona and others.  The results show that character is something comprehensive, encompassing moral values, attitudes and behaviors, and emphasizes the need for character education to overcome the moral crisis.  The research underscores the important role of teachers in modeling ethical behavior, rewarding students' efforts, integrating moral values into lessons, and fostering leadership skills. It also emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts between schools, parents and communities to create a holistic environment conducive to character development. Various strategies for implementing character education in schools, including clear goal setting, parent and school partnerships, educator training, utilizing the “hidden curriculum”, encouraging critical thinking, utilizing school culture, and cultivating positive habits, are also discussed.  The study concludes that character education is essential to equip individuals with the moral compass needed to navigate the complexities of modern society and contribute positively to the nation.
